At the 2023 CMA Awards, Lainey Wilson and Jelly Roll are among the top nominees

Lainey Wilson, Zach Bryan, and other shocks or snubs from Thursday’s (7th) CMA Awards nominee announcement.

This year’s nominees reflect the popularity of various artists on the charts. Still, they also heavily favor recognizing relative newcomers whose star power is rising, such as Lainey Wilson, Jelly Roll, HARDY, and Jordan Davis. The 57th annual Country Music Association Awards will be presented on September 14th.

Morgan Wallen’s “Last Night,” Luke Combs’ cover of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car,” and Zach Bryan’s “Something in the Orange” were among the songs that gained traction on the Billboard Hot 100 over the course of the past year. These artists are among those who have received top honors going into the CMA Awards this year.

Again leading the pack with nine nominations, “Heart Like a Truck” singer-songwriter Wilson is followed by “Need a Favour” hitmaker Jelly Roll (five nominations), Combs, and HARDY, all of whom have four nominations. Meanwhile, a number of musicians, songwriters, and producers received three nominations each. These individuals include Davis, Ashley McBryde, producer/mix engineer Joey Moi, Jordan Schmidt (writer/producer of “Wait in the truck”), Chris Stapleton, Wallen, and Derek Wells (musician/producer).

The 2023 show’s eligibility window runs from July 1, 2022, to June 30, 2023. In order to be eligible for the CMA Awards, “singles, albums, music videos, and qualified music products for the annual show must have been released or reached peak national prominence during the eligibility period.”

Luke Bryan and Peyton Manning will co-host the 57th Annual CMA Awards, which will be broadcast live from Nashville on Wednesday, Nov. 8 from 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM (EST). The greatest omissions and surprises from Thursday’s nominations are listed below.

The unexpected: Lainey Wilson

Lainey Wilson received her first-ever CMA nominations last year, as well as her first-ever wins for Female Vocalist of the Year and New Artist of the Year. With a nomination for entertainer of the year, the Louisiana singer-songwriter’s mighty career rise this year—which includes her hit single “Heart Like a Truck,” her critically acclaimed album Bell Bottom Country, and charting collaborations with HARDY and Jelly Roll—propel her to the CMA Awards ceremony’s most prestigious category.

Wilson had nine nominations in total before to this year’s ceremony, including this one. Along with other categories, she is nominated for single of the year, album of the year, and female vocalist of the year.

Wilson is the only performer since Chris Stapleton, who won the Rookie Award in 2015 and was nominated for Entertainer of the Year in 2016, to win the CMA Award for New Artist of the Year one year and receive an Entertainer of the Year nomination the following year. (For the record, one performer moved even more quickly. In 1982, Ricky Skaggs was nominated for Entertainer of the Year and won the Horizon Award (the precursor to New Artist of the Year).

YEAR’S BEST ENTERTAINER

  • Luke Combs
  • Chris Stapleton
  • Carrie Underwood
  • Morgan Wallen
