Biography of Ralph Lauren
Ralph Lauren Lifshitz, better known by his stage name Ralph Lauren, was born in The Bronx, New York City, on October 14, 1939. Ashkenazi Jewish immigrants from Pinsk, Belarus, Frieda (née Cutler), and Frank Lifshitz were his parents. With two older brothers and one older sister, he is the youngest of four children. Prior to changing schools and graduating from DeWitt Clinton High School in 1957, he studied at the Manhattan Talmudical Academy. The City University of New York (CUNY)’s Baruch College was his next stop, although he left after just two years of study there.
He changed his name from Lifshitz to Lauren because of the awful filthy connotations of his old name in English. not to hide his Jewish identity, as some have claimed. In his own words: “The other kids used to tease me a lot when I was a kid. It had a difficult name. So I made the decision to alter it. When people discovered this, they questioned, “Did you change your name because you don’t want to be Jewish?” I responded, “Certainly not.” That is not the main topic. My Californian cousins had Lawrence added to their last names. So I didn’t really consider anything or anyone when choosing a last name; I just thought, “I’m going to pick a nice last name.”

DAVID: “We’ve had this image up on our wall in Montauk forever. One of those life events that you assume you remember since the photo was constantly there on the wall. Nobody thinks it was me despite having blonde hair that was curled. It demonstrates the warmth and love we have always had for one another. Young and now, I still experience it.
